ASTM A283 grade C VS A36 steel

ASTM A283 grade C and A36 steel are two of the most popular carbon steel grades used in a variety of applications. However, their properties and applications differ significantly. In this article, we will compare their mechanical and chemical properties, as well as their applications.

Mechanical Properties

Chemical Properties

Both ASTM A283 grade C and A36 steel are carbon steel alloys. They have a carbon content of up to 0.29%, which is low enough to minimize overheating and cracking during welding. However, their chemical compositions differ slightly.

ASTM A283 grade C contains 0.24% carbon, 0.90% manganes, 0.035% phosphorus, and 0.04% sulfur. On the other hand, ASTM A36 steel contains 0.26% carbon, 0.80% manganese, 0.060% phosphorus, and 0.050% sulfur.

Applications

ASTM A283 grade C is commonly used in structural applications that require low to intermediate tensile strength, such as buildings and bridges. It is also used in offshore platforms, shipbuilding, and pressure vessels. Meanwhile, ASTM A36 steel is commonly used in the construction of buildings, bridges, and industrial machinery.

Both grades are suitable for welding, although ASTM A36 steel is considered more weldable due to its lower carbon content. However, ASTM A283 grade C can be welded, provided that the carbon content of the filler metal is less than 0.35%. It is important to note that both grades are susceptible to cold cracking when welded and require preheating before welding.

Cost

ASTM A283 grade C carbon steel and A36 steel have different costs due to their composition, properties, and applications. ASTM A283 grade C is more affordable than ASTM A36 steel, making it more commonly used in low to intermediate strength applications. However, ASTM A36 steel is preferred for high-strength applications because of its higher yield and tensile strength.
