Welcome to BBN Steel Materials Factory
ASTM A516 GR 70 HR steel is a common heat-treated carbon steel plate used for pressure vessel fabrication and boiler applications. Different types of ASTM A516 GR 70 steel plates are available in the market, including normalized and stress-relieved plates. The equivalent materials of A516Gr70 are EN10028 P355GH, DIN 19Mn6, BS1501 224-490 A & B, etc. When choosing a material for pressure vessel fabrication and boiler applications, it is important to consider the specific requirements of the application and choose a material that meets those requirements.
Equivalent Steel Grades:
ASTM A516 GR 70 is commonly known as“boiler quality" steel and is often used in applications that require high pressure and high-temperature resistance. Other similar grades of carbon steel include:
● P355GH – P355GH steel plate implements European standard EN10028-2:2003, which is used to manufacture high temperature performance steel plate for container equipment. Tensile strength Rm360-630MPa, yield strength ReH: 235-355MPa,.
● 19Mn6 – 19Mn6 steel is the German standard number of high-temperature structural steel. 19Mn6 high-temperature and high-pressure boiler steel plate is mainly used in the production of steam drum drums for power plant boilers..
● 224-490 A & B – BS1501 224-490 A & B steel plate is a steel for boiler and pressure vessels. It is mainly used in the manufacture of boilers, pressure vessels and pipes for transporting hot liquids. BS1501 224-490 A & B steel plates have a minimum yield strength of 220 - 295 MPa.
A516 Grade 70 pressure vessel steel is made by combining carbon steel plates with elements like manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon in specific proportions. The composition of the steel determines its properties, including its mechanical and chemical characteristics. The steel has a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi and a minimum yield strength of 38,000 psi. The elongation rate is 17% for plates up to 8 inches thick and drops to 14% for plates thicker than 8 inches.
ASTM A516 GR 70 plates come in four different grades based on their carbon content – 55, 60, 65, and 70. These grades determine the minimum tensile and yield strength requirements. ASTM A516 GR 70 can also be produced as normalized or stress-relieved steel plates.
Normalized steel plates are heat-treated by heating the steel to a specific temperature and holding it there for a certain time before cooling it slowly in air. This process ensures that the steel has a uniform grain size, making it stronger and more ductile.
Stress-relieved steel plates undergo the same heating and cooling process as normalized steel plates but are also subjected to a stress-relieving treatment. This treatment helps to reduce any internal stresses that may be present in the steel plates.
ASTM A516 GR 70 boiler and pressure vessel steel is widely used in pressure vessels and boilers in industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical and manufacturing. Pressure vessels are containers that hold gases or liquids at a higher pressure than the ambient pressure. For example, natural gas storage tanks and steam drums in power generation plants are pressure vessels. Similarly, boilers are used to generate steam by heating water inside the boiler tubes. The steam then drives turbines to generate electricity or perform mechanical work.
ASTM A516 GR 70 is preferred for pressure vessel fabrication and boiler applications due to its high strength, excellent weldability, and toughness. It is also resistant to corrosion and oxidation at high temperatures, making it ideal for use in high-temperature applications.
