What is EN10025-3 S420N carbon steel?

EN10025-3 S420N carbon steel is a high-strength structural steel which is supplied in the normalized or normalized rolled condition. The EN10025-3 S420N steel is used in a variety of heavy-duty industries where lasting and good performance is required. The steel is used in the construction of buildings, bridges and other structures, in manufacturing machinery and in the production of pumps, valves and tanks.

The EN10025-3 S420N carbon structural steel is hot rolled, normalized or normalized rolled in a variety of grades and thicknesses. The steel is available in three yield strength classes; S420N steel in the normalized state has yield strength of 420 MPa, the nominal thickness of this grade is ≤16mm. The nominal thickness ranges from 16 up to 40mm in the normalized state and from 40mm up to 60mm in the normalized rolled condition. Depending on the thickness and yield strength, the EN10025-3 S420N may attain a minimum Charpy impact energy of 27J at temperatures ranging from odd -60°C.

EN10025-3 S420N high-strength structural steel has good weldability, fabrication and formability. Its weldability can be enhanced by preheat inputs prior to welding to avoid excessive thermal stresses. The steel is preheat treated thoroughly prior to welding, this will dissociate hydrogen present in the weld metal and will result in micro-fissuring. This micro-fissuring affects the strength of the joint hence it should be minimized by using smaller welding current, reducing preheat and appropriate welding parameters. Fabrications such as bending and cutting can be done easily with the EN10025-3 S420N steel.

EN10025-3 S420N carbon structural steel has good corrosion resistance. It forms a protective layer on the surface of this steel due to the formation of protective oxide layer which resist the attack of atmospheric corrosion. The oxidation resistance of this steel is advantageous when it is used in the presence of high temperature or corrosive environment.

The applications of the EN10025-3 S420N carbon steel include wind towers, civil engineering structures, industrial silos, cranes, bridges, lattice masts, linings and box girders, construction buildings and shipbuilding. The high-strength structural steel is used to build structures with greater strength. The EN10025-3 S420N is primarily used for pressure vessels, machine frames, automotive components and for other types of heavy duty industrial equipment.
