A283 Grade C Carbon and Alloy Steel Material Property

A283 Grade C carbon and alloy steel is a product of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) that conforms to ASTM A283/A283M-18 standard specification for low and intermediate tensile strength carbon steel plates. ASTM A283 GrC steel is primarily used in structural applications and in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures.

The chemical composition of ASTM A283 Grade C steel includes carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. These elements provide the material with good mechanical properties such as high strength and ductility. The carbon content in this grade of steel is low at 0.24% maximum, which makes it more weldable and less prone to cracking. The manganese content is 0.90% maximum which improves the strength and toughness of the material.

The tensile strength of ASTM A283 GrC Carbon Steel ranges between 380-515 MPa (55,000-75,000 psi) and the yield strength is 205 MPa (30,000 psi). The elongation at break is >25%, which indicates the material has good ductility. The modulus of elasticity is 200 GPa (29.0 x 10^6 psi), which describes the stiffness of the material. The impact toughness of A283 Grade C steel is measured in terms of Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact test at room temperature. The test involves striking a notched specimen with a swinging pendulum to measure the amount of energy absorbed by the material before it fractures. The CVN impact value for this grade of steel is typically around 20-25 J (15-18 ft-lbs). A283 Grade C steel has a Brinell hardness of 119-162 HB, which is a measure of the material's resistance to deformation by indentation. This hardness value is relatively low compared to other carbon steels, indicating that the material is relatively easy to machine and form.

A283 Grade C steel is considered to be weldable because of its low carbon content, which reduces the risk of cracking during welding. The material can be welded using conventional arc welding techniques such as SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW. It is important to use low hydrogen electrodes to prevent hydrogen cracking and to preheat the material prior to welding. A283 Grade C steel is not designed to resist corrosion and should be protected from exposure to moisture and corrosive environments. The material can be painted or coated with a protective layer to improve its resistance to corrosion.

ASTM A283 Grade C Carbon and Alloy Steel is widely used in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures due to its good mechanical properties and low cost. It is commonly used in the fabrication of storage tanks, pressure vessels, and boilers. Other applications include pipe manufacturing, heavy equipment manufacturing, and transportation equipment.
